The town counsel worked with the skaters in town and amended the current policy and attitude towards skaters. With some discussion about safety for all residents, the skaters and the counsel came to an agreement. The skaters have agreed to work on the new options for the ordinance that covers skating down town, and on the new guide lines for the use of the community skatepark. The counsel agreed to lift the helmet requirement and amend the current ordinance to only ban skating on the sidewalks and street in the down town area during business hours. There is still work to be done, but Winthrop taking a positive stance in efforts to make skaters feel welcome in Winthrop. Maybe we can use this as a model to help Gardner and other communities support our sport and life style.

Here is a link to the article in the KJ about Mondays meeting.
http://kennebecjournal.mainetoday.com/news/local/7052889.html

Bottle Drive

Skater Mike has set up a bottle drive at "Lou's Beverage Barn" to help raise funds for the new park. A good time was had by all that showed up. We had skaters from Portland to Waterville and locations in between show up. Everyone that skated walked away with something. We even had 3 broken boards from the event. It may look tame, but "The Link" will eat up boards and skaters like nobody's business. I would like to thank our sponsors - Softrucks, Vox Footwear, Constance Clothing, Hoodlum Skateboards, and Cosmic Charlies for donating prizes for the event. A special thanks to "The Link " for opening the doors so we could have the event rain or shine. A special thanks goes out to Casandra who did allot of baking for the event and had a table set up with food and drinks. We even talked her into entering the contest. It really does a good job of explaining skateboarders from their point of veiw. Here is a sample:

Dyrdek and Rodriguez said they’ve both have been chased by the police.

“I’m saying I’m running from cops not even a year ago,” Dyrdek said, describing how he and a group of 30 other skaters fled from police at a Santa Monica schoolyard. His description, including how he climbed over a fence, sounded similar to the opening scene of his movie.

“It’s the reality of what we all do. It’s not like there’s tons of legal places to ride a skateboard,” he said. “There’s only one in L.A. Everything we skate to this day still is illegal.”

Here is the link to the article:

http://www.keenesentinel.com/articles/2009/07/19/business/news/free/id_363986.txt

Amelia Brodka

Ameila is a new rider for the Capital City Skate Team, but has been a family friend for years. We wisher luck in the event as she will be skating against some of our other friends like Nora Vasconcellos and Gaby Ponce. Both know there way around a vert ramp and I would not be surprised to see Nora or Gaby land the first 540 ever by a woman in a vert contest.

Try to get there for the action as it will be worth the cost of the ticket to see this event

Photo by: Brian Wilks of Amelia on the Vert Ramp at Woodward West

New Product from Powell / Bones

We just got in a new shipment of Decks, Bearings and Wheels from Powell / Bones. I remind some that it does nothing to support skaters and this issue if the comment is crass or vulgar. With possitive comments we can show the community that we do not deserve to be stereotyped as negative members of the community. I will post the dates for the next City Counsel meeting for those that want to attend and support the cause.

Here is a link to the article

http://kennebecjournal.mainetoday.com/news/local/6526131.html

Keepin it Real

Erik

Thanks for the Support

Just wanted to let you know that we really appreciated all the support from our customers and vendors. We had a great time at the Opening - We raised 80 plus dollars for the new Augusta Skatepark. We grilled up about 50 burgers and 60 hot dogs out at the park. A good time was had by all at the BBQ. The skating was fantastic with lots of sick tricks. Lots of games of skate were going on. make sure to ask Chris how much he owes Toby (double or nothing - lol)

Each month the shop will host a get together for skaters. We will find a different spot we can all ride. If you have any idea's post them up so we can keep it fresh.

I have had allot of skaters interested in meeting here at the shop and skating to Hallowell on the rail trail. Stop in for a cold one and skate back. We can look into setting up a box and rail for a few tricks on the way down and back.

Thanks

Capital City Skate

Sunday's Visit

Just got word that in addition to Toebee Parkhurst, Matt Fenell and Josh Perkins will be in the shop on Sunday. It made the front page of today’s paper. It's a good article and addresses some of the issues that face skaters. It talks about the new Augusta Park, the out dated city ordinance that covers skateboarding, and mentions our shop. Please use this link to read the article and post your opinion about skateboarding in Augusta in the KJ’s comments section. Maybe we can help ease the stereotyping of skaters if we all use our voice in a positive forum that elected officials can see. After all, they do work for us.

http://kennebecjournal.mainetoday.com/news/local/6420570.html

Grand Opening

Yes we have had the doors open for a month now and really apprciate the support from all the skaters.
